What is taking notes? 

Writing down ideas and lectures in our own word.

Why we should take notes?
  • Help us pay attention 
  • Help us study for examination
  • Improve our memories
  • Takes ownership of the ideas
  • Help us engage our senses
  • Organize data and information
  • Help the lectures test students on how will the information captured
Why review notes?
  • We lose 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within few hours
  • Identify any question for peers, the next class or ask the lecturer
  • There is not enough time to absorb all the information given in class
Why recapture notes after class?
  • Frees you up to write in quick, shorthand during class 
  • An excellent test-prep strategy for reinforcing information
While taking notes we should
  • Be an aggressive, not a passive listener (Ask questions and discuss if its hard to understand)
  • Watch your lecturer mood (Key actions to note as you observe your instructor)
  • Be alert to repetition (When an instructor repeats a specific point, make note of it)
