MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
Memory is the ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall information
The Memory Process
- Encoding Data
Human - Writing, reading, or watching something and then will saved into our memory.
- Storage
Human - Our memory will be stored into our brain, whether in the sensory memory, the short-term memory or the permanent long term-memory.
- Retrieval (Memory Recall)
Human - Re-accessing of events or information from the past, which have been previously encoded and stored in the brain. It is known as remembering.
3 Different types of memory
Sensory memory
- incoming information from our 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant. If one pay attention, it will go to the short-term memory. if one does not pay attention, the information will be lost.
Short-term memory
- A very limited storage. Information need to be rehearsed/repeated in order to get information to long-term memory. Otherwise, the information will be forgotten.
- unlimited and large storage. If the information is not being used for some time, it will be forgotten. Having strategies during encoding earlier would help in retrieval process.
What is concentration?
focusing your attention on what you are doing
Caused of poor concentration
- Lack of attention
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation
- Distraction from others
- Uncomfortable environment
- Illness, Tiredness (Physiological matters)
- Personal problems, worries and anxieties (Psychological matters)
- Use motivational and organizational strategies
- Create a positive learning environments
- Use active learning strategies
- Match your learning style to the task
- Monitor your concentration
