WEEK 2 - MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING COCENTRATION

Hello✌ Our next class was held in dewn Al-Biruni. We learn about memory learning and improving concentration. Our lecturer who give this lecture was Wan Rohana Binti Wan Endut. So, here is the lesson.

MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

Memory is the ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall information

The Memory Process
  • Encoding Data
Computer - The process of putting a sequence of characters. For example letters, numbers and                                punctuation will be specialized into a format form to put into a storage.
Human      - Writing, reading, or watching something and then will saved into our memory.
  • Storage
Computer - Storage will be saved into an electronic devices such as CPU and memory card.
Human   - Our memory will be stored into our brain, whether in the sensory memory, the short-term                      memory or the permanent long term-memory.
  • Retrieval (Memory Recall)
Computer - The process of accessing information from memory devices or storage devices like                               printer.
Human     - Re-accessing of events or information from the past, which have been previously                                 encoded and stored in the brain. It is known as remembering.

3 Different types of memory

Sensory memory
  • incoming information from our 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant. If one pay attention, it will go to the short-term memory. if one does not pay attention, the information will be lost.
Short-term memory
  • A very limited storage. Information need to be rehearsed/repeated in order to get information to long-term memory. Otherwise, the information will be forgotten.
Long-term memory
  • unlimited and large storage. If the information is not being used for some time, it will be forgotten. Having strategies during encoding earlier would help in retrieval process.
What is concentration?

focusing your attention on what you are doing

Caused of poor concentration
  1. Lack of attention
  2. Lack of interest
  3. Lack of motivation
  4. Distraction from others
  5. Uncomfortable environment
  6. Illness, Tiredness (Physiological matters)
  7. Personal problems, worries and anxieties (Psychological matters)
Strategies to improve concentration
  • Use motivational and organizational strategies
  • Create a positive learning environments
  • Use active learning strategies
  • Match your learning style to the task
  • Monitor your concentration
